Rakon Migrates to Pure Storage to Support Global Expansion and Improve Competitiveness

AUCKLAND, New Zealand – April 26, 2022 — Pure Storage (NYSE: PSTG), the IT pioneer that delivers the world’s most advanced data storage technology and services, announced today that Rakon, a leading New Zealand headquartered supplier of frequency control solutions to global telecommunications, positioning, space and defence industries, has modernised its local IT infrastructure using Pure’s technology to underpin the company’s global expansion.

Rakon has seen demand for its products, which their customers use for a range of applications including 5G networks, precision positioning for agriculture and mining, satellites, ground stations and radar, grow around the world. With operations in New Zealand, the UK, France, India, and sales offices around the world, it needed to modernise its IT infrastructure to keep pace with its business growth.

“Rakon’s growth globally is increasingly dependent on timely, accurate, highly secure data, so our approach to how information is stored and managed is also increasingly vital. Our legacy storage solution, based on spinning disks, was grinding to a halt. Our infrastructure team was starting to see a number of failures around drives and we were also constantly running out of storage. Pure Storage came to us with an all-flash solution that would resolve all these issues and also help us migrate our legacy infrastructure seamlessly. We’ve been really happy with the results.”

IS Infrastructure Manager at Rakon

Amongst the goals of the migration, Rakon sought to ensure the company’s storage platform could keep up with growing capacity needs, improve speed, performance and reliability, and reduce the need for in-house staff to manage the company’s storage environment. Pure was able to meet all these goals comfortably.

Stuart Blythe, Country Manager for Pure Storage New Zealand, said: “Rakon is just the latest of the hundreds of companies that we’ve helped in the country to better optimise their data. The simplicity of Pure’s technology also enabled Rakon to quickly migrate its data platform to support its global expansion.”

Working with Datacom as the systems integration partner, Pure Storage was able to seamlessly migrate Rakon’s entire storage environment in one week, with no downtime. The solution has delivered significant efficiencies and agile capacity and performance enhancements, including:

  • Up to five times faster performance speeds for ERP system record updates;
  • Faster and more reliable access to core applications – the Rakon database is now operating 60 times faster;
  • Through compression and deduplication improvements, Pure FlashStack enabled Rakon to almost halve its storage requirements from 80 terabytes to 44 terabytes; and
  • Significant efficiency gains in accessing its Business Intelligence system – from two and a half to three and a half hours to run analysis on mission critical data, down to 45 minutes.

All these improvements have allowed Rakon’s IT team to focus on more strategic initiatives that are contributing to a thriving global business.
